Vikings homeland lesson plan

VIKINGS

Title: VIKING HOMELAND

Subject: Social Studies – Exploring an ancient society

Grade: Three

Duration: 20 minutes

Objective:
To demonstrate where the Vikings, as a people came from in relationship to the world today.

Materials:
Blank, black and white maps of Denmark, Norway and Sweden (Scandinavian)Book: Life in a Viking Town by: Jane Shuter

Activities/Procedures:
We will read the beginning of the book to learn about the area that used to be known as Scandinavia (word wall) and then colour in our map to show the area as it is reflected in today’s world. We will use these maps to show the Viking settlements and explorations as we learn more about both those topics.

Conclusions/Follow-up (next lesson):
As a class we will continue to read Adventures with the Vikings by Linda Bailey as the story goes on to describe Viking homes and society now that they will know where the homeland is.

No specific connections but just background information so they can put it into context.
